Leatherwork
Leatherwork is a traditional craft that has been used for many years. Originally used to produce clothing, accessories, shoes and functional pieces, leatherwork has grown in complexity with stunning pieces now being created. Leatherwork is now used to create beautiful accessories including belts, hats, handmade shoes, glove etc. Garments can also be made from leather by an artisan skilled in leatherwork. Leatherwork can also be used to create art in its own right, with wonderful techniques being used to manipulate the leather itself.
Leatherwork can involve several techniques. The most commonly used is leather dyes, which is used to change the colour of the leather. To dye such a tough and hardwearing material as leather, an alcohol based solvent is required to get the pigment into the leather. Most of these dyes will not give the leather an outright new colour, but will give it a certain hue. Leather can also be painted, and many leatherworkers are skilled at this. An important skill is leather carving and stamping. This is done by manipulating the leather to alter the shape and texture of the leather.
This type of arts and crafts is for those with more advanced skills. It also requires numerous tools and techniques, as well as a large amount of space to carry this out; a workshop is ideal. Leatherwork is highly rewarding however, and many people continue their arts and crafts for years, perfecting their skill and designing wonderful items.
