Painting

Painting is an arts and crafts that is enjoyed by many people all over the world. Painting has been used for thousands of years to both record historical events and to decorate the home and surroundings. Examples of painting can be found on every continent, including cave paintings and kanji in ancient Japan. Painting has many uses and can be seen in thousands of applications. Quite simply, painting is the art of making marks on a surface using a brush, sponge or similar implement. These marks are caused by a pigment that is usually suspended in a solvent. There are many different types of paint that are used for different painting applications.

All of us have tried painting at some point of our lives; most frequently school! Here, simple and inexpensive paints were used to create simple paintings. Throughout your life, paint would have been used to decorate your home, colour your car and thousands of other objects. Painting frequently refers to the arts and crafts however, using paint to create stunning works of art. Many famous painters revolutionised the world of painting by introducing new and exciting materials to their art, developing new techniques and beginning new movements that lead to new styles over the years.

To begin in painting you simply need a brush and a few paints, as well as something to paint on! The arts and crafts stores here stock a huge range of paints for all kinds of applications, including watercolours, acrylics and oils. The world of brushes can also be overwhelming, with different shapes, lengths and fibres being used. There are also many different papers, canvases and cards for painting, depending on what paint you are using.
