Polymer Clay

Polymer clay is a material that has revolutionised the use of clays and sculpture in the home. Polymer clay allows for people without expensive kilns and firing equipment to sculpt with own pieces of art that can then be fired and baked in a conventional oven at low temperatures. This means that a whole world of art and sculpture can be opened up, allowing everyone to enjoy this expressive and exciting form of arts and crafts.

Polymer clay has so many applications it is difficult to know where to start! It can be used for jewellery making and beading, as both pendants and beads can easily be made with polymer clay. Anyone can create their own unique jewellery so simply, and you can be as creative as you like. There is also a new product, precious metal clay (PMC) that contains either silver or gold, allowing you to create items that will become solid metal pieces. Polymer clay is also perfect or so many home decoration applications, including containers, plant pots, light fittings and more. The only limit is quite honestly your imagination. Polymer clay can also be used to embellish other items that can be safely placed in an oven!

To start with polymer clay, visit your local arts and crafts store or one online and purchase a few blocks of polymer clay. It is available in many different colours, so if you can’t make up your mind, buy a few and just paint your finished piece! Many different tools can be purchased, but these are not necessary and an old knife and pencil will do a good job! There are loads of website and books that can help you with your polymer clay crafts, as well as those in the arts and crafts stores who can share their knowledge with you.
